About Aiken

The best investment we ever made. . .

As impressive as the stable’s list of stakes winners is the roster of people that have been in Dogwood Stable partnerships. There are current and retired chairmen or presidents of numerous Fortune 500 corporations, including Delta Air Lines, Dow Chemical, Prudential, Marsh & McLennan, Ralston Purina Company, Sunkist, Textron Corporation and VISA USA. Currently half of Dogwood investors are chairmen or presidents of companies, or they own their own businesses.

Significantly, 47 of 145 current investors are involved in more than one Dogwood partnership, a sure sign of client satisfaction.

Dogwood Stable President Cot Campbell is justifiably proud of the client roster, which includes many professional horse people. Over one-third of our clients are Thoroughbred breeders in their own right or actively campaign their own racing stables.

On the event of our 30th anniversary in 2003, we asked several of our clients to comment on their relationship with Dogwood:

"When Dogwood created the concept of owning horses in partnership 30 years ago, no one foresaw that it would become such a widespread practice. The main reason for this success is that Dogwood made it easy for the new owners and made them feel like they and they alone owned the horse. Owning part of a Kentucky Derby contender suddenly became affordable. . .I own one-quarter of all 60 or so Dogwood horses. People often ask me why I don’t own 15 of my own. The answer is simple. There is a lot more action with 60 and, more importantly, I have experienced professionals buying and managing the horses."
-- Paul Oreffice, Retired CEO of Dow, New York Racing Association Board member

"I have loved my relationship with Dogwood for the past thirty years. While I was generally already aware of it, over the years it reinforced my exposure to the tremendous excitement of the sport, coupled with the myriad of pitfalls that confronts every person in the Thoroughbred business. . .One of my favorite memories was my first exposure to Royal Ascot. Cot told me six months ahead of time that Pessu was suppose to run in the Gold Cup and to get my credentials in order. In time I found out this meant having a morning suit, a top hat, and letters of recommendation from five distinguished Americans to get our invitation into the Royal Enclosure. I loved the strawberries and champagne, rubbing shoulders with the Queen, and the great excitement of the meet."
-- Jack Lansill, President, Alleghan Investment Management Inc.

"Little did we realize when we visited Dogwood’s farm in Greenville, Georgia, in 1979, knowing zero about Thoroughbred racehorses, almost 30 years later we would have owned a piece of over 100 horses! This is all due to Cot’s creativity in "inventing" Thoroughbred partnerships for folks like us who would have never considered owning a first-class racehorse. . .It is by far our best investment in fun, friendships and thrills."
-- Hayes Clement, retired partner, Arthur Andersen LLP.

"My first experience with Dogwood began in 1986 with my purchase of one share in Dogwood All Away with my dear friend Flora Roberts. Since then I have shared in many Dogwood partnerships. It has been an exciting, fascinating ride! Among my colorful memories I have to always include Summer Squall, whose greatness at the track and great personality off the track, endeared him to all of us fortunate enough to own shares in his syndicate. And the many others, none perhaps with his brilliance, but almost all of them classy individuals– including Inlander, British Banker, and Luge. These are just a few of the horses I’ve owned with Dogwood, and though I haven’t counted I’d take a guess that I’ve been involved with 30 to 40 partnerships over the years. The 30th anniversary of Dogwood Stable is cause for much celebration of an enterprise that has been enormously successful in one of the hardest arenas of the world, that of Thoroughbred horse racing. I’ve been proud to be associated with such a fine outfit, which sets the standard for all that is best in racing."
-- Helen Brann, literary agent
